Major Financial Institution Selects Trilio to Simplify and Scale Data Protection for OpenShift and GKE

A major Latin American bank with over 19 million customers and operations in Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, Honduras, El Salvador, and the U.S. needed to modernize how it protected applications and data across an expanding Kubernetes landscape. The institution—one of the most respected in its region—offers services across mining, energy, commercial, and consumer sectors, with nearly 500 branches and 2,700 ATMs.

To support their cloud-first strategy, the bank adopted Red Hat OpenShift on Azure Red Hat OpenShift (ARO) and Google GKE, running mission-critical applications in hybrid and multi-cloud environments. But with growing Kubernetes adoption came new data protection and compliance challenges—especially under stringent financial regulations.

Seeking a Smarter Way to Protect Kubernetes Applications

The bank faced growing pains from its legacy backup tools. Their previous approach combined manual scripting, error-prone processes, and limited expertise—making recoveries slow and unreliable. The system couldn’t scale with evolving cloud architectures, and a few skilled staff were the only ones capable of navigating complex recovery workflows.

Key challenges included:

  • Meeting strict compliance standards with granular, secure backups.
  • Simplifying disaster recovery and migration between clusters.
  • Reducing human error and reliance on niche skillsets.
  • Supporting dynamic microservices applications across cloud providers.
  • Improving agility through selective, application-aware protection.

Trilio Selected for Cloud-Native, Kubernetes-First Data Protection

Following a competitive evaluation, the bank selected Trilio for its scalable, OpenShift-certified architecture and ability to meet enterprise-grade SLA and compliance needs.

Reasons for selection included:

  • Multi-Cloud Visibility: Unified management across OpenShift and GKE clusters from a single pane of glass.
  • Cloud Agnosticism: Seamless recovery and migration across any CSI-supported storage, with full application continuity.
  • Automation-Friendly: Built-in support for disaster recovery testing, with future plans for integrations with Ansible and RHACM.
  • DevOps & GitOps Integration: Compatible with the bank’s modern workflows and CI/CD practices.
  • Application-Aware Control: Selective “Inclusions” and “Exclusions” to optimize storage and network use while protecting only what matters.
  • Transformative Recovery: Support for metadata-only recovery and runtime object transformations for seamless app mobility.
  • Ransomware Protection: S3 object locking and app-level encryption, aligned with NIST cybersecurity frameworks.

Accelerating Deployment and Recovery at Scale

The bank rolled out Trilio in under three hours, with a successful PoC completed across several use cases—backup, recovery, application migration, and metadata-only restores. At the time, Azure Disk was still in tech preview for OpenShift, so the bank used Red Hat OpenShift Data Foundation (ODF) for persistent volumes—accelerating their production deployment.

Results:

  • Full deployment in under 3 hours.
  • Recovery times cut from days to minutes.
  • Trilio enabled automatic protection across Red Hat OpenShift and GKE environments.
  • No specialized expertise needed—teams across the bank can now manage data protection confidently.
