The event

The event season for 2023 is in full swing, and the Trilio team just returned from Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Spain. This annual conference with over 1,500 Exhibitors and 90,000 attendees is one of our favorites to attend. The team spent almost a week meeting with world-class partners, customers, and prospects.

Booths

While presentations and debates swirled around Metaverse, NFT, and 6G,  many stunning booths in particular from the traditional TEMs (Telecom Equipment Manufacturers) such as ERICSSON, NOKIA (going through a rebranding and image overhaul), Cisco, Juniper, the relevant Chinese vendors Huawei, ZTE, and impressive mobile telephony standouts showing -off numerous android-based mobile phones (that will not be seen in the US markets), VR and AR-based products, robotic dogs, and hardware that will make 5G a global realization; but, more impressive was the discussions had around true end-to-end 5G Open Ran delivery.

O-Ran

Thanks to the good work of the O-Ran Alliance (born 5 years ago by AT&T, China Mobile, Deutsche Telekom, NTT DOCOMO, and Orange) and the more recent industry gatherings i.e. https://telecominfraproject.com/, duly sponsored and supported by the GSMA https://www.gsma.com/, this paradigm shift of system integration of disaggregated networks changes the way we think of network technology, the importance of data protection, disaster recovery, security, the pursuit of an ecosystem’s interoperability and the flexibility/agility provided to its operational management, considering the pursuit of investments to which Hyperscalers such as AWS, Azure or GCP do want to have a place on the table.

GSMA API Open Gateway

Another key announcement at the event was the GSMA API Open Gateway initiative which has the support of 21 mobile network operators. The move is a “paradigm shift”, said GSMA, in the way the telecoms industry delivers services in an “API economy world”. It is a framework of universal network application programmable interfaces (APIs) to provide universal access to operator networks for developers, with all network APIs to be documented in the CAMARA open source project https://camaraproject.org/, run by the Linux Foundation, meaning there will be exposure to all Cloud providers, enriching the cloud developer experience thus exposing telcos to open up to new models of consumption and monetization for their networks.”

Top Trend Setters

Through the leadership, collaboration and innovation of partners like Red Hat, VMware, NTT Data, TechMahindra, TataCS, IBM, Kyndryl, Atos, the top trendsetters consulting firms such as Mckinsey and BCG and not wanting to keep out the most prominent/traditional Global System Integrators such as Accenture, Deloitte, CapGemini to name a few, markets will see acceleration of this scalable architecture. 2023 through 2025 organizations will mobilize and execute plans moving from Labs to Real Live production deployments around the world.

Trilio Highlights

A true highlight for the Trilio team, besides the great food and people we met with in Barcelona, was seeing the vibrance in Hall 8! 4YFN’s programs and events give startups access to game-changing ideas and bleeding-edge discussions, an international network of contacts, and business opportunities. Our friends at Wayra were front and center in Hall 8 with a cadre of innovative portfolio companies! The Wayra team and program continue to impress. Trilio is proud to call them our investors.
